Network Data Transfer — Data Traffic

Most surprises in cloud bills come from data traffic. On portvMind, traffic between your resources in the same region is free; traffic leaving the region is metered transparently and can be seen in advance in the calculator.

What is Network Data Transfer?

In a cloud environment data is constantly on the move: between your application server and your database, between object storage and your backup system, between the end user and your web server. Network Data Transfer is the layer where this movement is measured and charged.

With most global providers this line is the hardest part of the bill to predict. One charge applies when data comes in, another when it goes out and a third when it crosses regions. When the total is seen at the end of the month, it becomes a line item that needs explaining between the business unit and IT.

portvMind’s approach is simpler: traffic between your resources in the same region is not charged. There is no cost when your application server talks to your database, when your backup job writes to object storage or when your Kubernetes nodes communicate with each other. You can build your architecture on sound design principles rather than cost worries. Traffic leaving the region is metered and billed at a transparent unit price.

Advantages

Free Internal Traffic

Data flow between resources in the same region is not charged.

Predictable Cost

Egress traffic is metered on a single, transparent unit; there is no tiered surprise structure.

VXLAN-Based Isolation

Both speed and network-level isolation in data transfer.

Visibility in Metering

Track your traffic consumption from the console, see the trend and plan your budget accordingly.

See It in the Calculator First

Hybrid Compatibility

Set up the data flow between your on-premises environment and the cloud securely.

Use cases

  • High-traffic web applications that serve a lot of content to end users
  • Frequent backup and replication jobs within a region
  • Hybrid architectures with regular data flow between on-premises systems and the cloud
  • Microservice architectures where services talk to each other constantly
  • Media and file distribution

Know before you go over budget

Your resources are metered for as long as they are running — you never pay for time you don’t use. In the console you can define a monthly or period-specific budget and get alerts when your spending reaches the 50%, 80% and 100% thresholds. Turn on overrun forecasting to see in advance whether your current consumption rate will take you over budget by the end of the period.

Alerts arrive by e-mail; with webhook support they can also be sent to Slack, Microsoft Teams or your own application.

Budget alerts send notifications; they do not stop resources automatically. You decide which resource to scale down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Traffic between your resources in the same region. For example, a server in the Istanbul region writing to Object Storage in the Istanbul region is not charged.

Yes. By entering your expected monthly traffic volume in the calculator, you can learn your cost before committing.

You can see your daily and monthly traffic volume in the console’s consumption reports. By defining a budget threshold you can get alerts on unexpected increases.

Place components that talk to each other often in the same region. Because in-region traffic is not charged, if the application server, database and storage are in the same region, the flow between them creates no cost.
